News : Charity Bowling for Haiyan Victims of the Philippines

The immediate aftermath of any tragedy is the outpouring of emotions and sympathy for those affected by the calamity. But after a while people seem to forget and move on with their lives as if nothing had happened. But the sufferings of the people affected by the tragedy last for a long time and the people need all the help that they can get.

The Super Typhoon called Haiyan or Yolanda in the Philippines hit the central part of the country especially the islands of Samar and Leyte. Tacloban city seemed like a warzone with almost all houses razed to the ground. In total about 11 million people have been affected by the tragedy and the total number of deaths so far has been reported to be more than 6000 people. As of January 2014, bodies of victims are still being recovered by relief workers.

Such was the extent of the calamity and the international community has responded to the tragedy by sending money, essential food items, medicine and humanitarian volunteers to help the Philippines government and Aid Agencies such as our own Mercy which are struggling to help the affected people. The Malaysian government has donated US one million dollars to the relief fund.

The Humanitarian Aid Team (HAT) of UNIKL RCMP felt that something has to be done to help those people affected by the super Typhoon as the reconstruction and relief work could go on for several months if not years.

It was for this purpose that HAT organized a Bowling tournament with the express objective of collecting money for the victims of Haiyan. The Tournament was held on 28 of December, 2013 at the Bowling Centre at the Mydin Mall, Ipoh. There was fairly good response from the staff and some students also took part in the tournament. We also managed get sponsors for the food as well as the prizes for the event. Hat managed to collect more than RM500 from this event and with money collected from other fund raising projects that were carried out last year, we hope to donate about RM1000 for the victims of Haiyan.

Our own humanitarian aid volunteers under the Rural Medical Mobile Team led by Associate Professor Dr.Abdsul Karim Russ and four other volunteers from the Health Science Programs will be in Bantayan, Philippines from 3rd  to 9th  February 2014 to offer financial aid and free medical assistance to the victims.  As they say, no amount of money or help is too small during such tragedies and therefore the Humanitarian Aid Team appeals to those interested to channel their donations through UNIKL.RCMP.

We take this opportunity to thank everyone for their contribution to make this fund raising project a success.
